Melody Yeager has been studying four generations of the same family in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Mexico, since 2007. In doing so, she has seen a transformation of the small village of mango farmers and subsistence fishermen on the Pacific Coast of Central Mexico. In recent years a multi-million dollar marina was built, changing the lives of the village’s inhabitants. The marina and highway construction has linked La Cruz de Huanacaxtle to a tourist zone that includes Puerto Villarta. While this has brought more commerce to the area, it has also caused such negative effects as increased rents and the flooding of local fish markets by imported fish to supply restaurants frequented by tourists.
