Megan Dixon advocates the Nurtured Heart Approach as a way to build positive relationships between parents and child. In this presentation, she gives examples of Nurtured Heart as a way to deal with difficult and intense behaviors of autistic/special needs children. Ms. Dixon urges parents to take a positive approach to intense emotions and to focus on building the child’s inner strength. She goes into depth about the three “stands” that parents take through Nurtured Heart – “absolutely no,” “absolutely yes,” and “absolutely clear.” Above all, Ms. Dixon encourages all people who work with autistic individuals to concentrate on what they CAN do, not on what they can’t.
