Interactions between species can vary with context. Dr. Melissa Ha investigated how indirect competition and facilitation between plant species that share pollinators vary with plant density, co-flowering neighbor identity, and flowering season using experimental pollination arrays of the California annual plant Clarkia unguiculata. Overall, she found strong evidence that the outcome of pollinator-mediated interactions depended on the species of co-flowering neighbor and preliminary evidence that these interactions varied over the season.
