This episode: Don't blink or you'll miss Henry VI's reassumption of the throne. Plus some character descriptions of key players and a chance to imagine yourself in London, 1471, and make a bet on who will prevail -- the Yorkists or the Lancastrians?
Course overview: Henry V, hero of Agincourt (1415), died in 1422 leaving his 9-month old son heir to the crown. After decades of war with France, England's economic and political turmoil came to a head. Magnates feuded over control of feeble-minded Henry VI fiscal policies and war strategies. Factions coalesced around the York family (white rose) and Lancastrian champions (red rose), erupting into battle in 1455. For 30 years, royal cousins connived and killed, destroying the Plantagenet line of kings. Material crammed into last June's four 90-minute sessions will be presented in a more leisurely 11 classes. OLLI Chico Peer Leader Leanne Ulvang earned her BA in Medieval & English History from Pomona College. In a dozen years as a peer leader, she has acquired teaching skills and improved her French, and had a great deal of fun. Teaching medieval history provides her opportunities to explore specific topics that interest her.
