Because of increased emphasis on STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) studies and opportunities for girls and women, more females than ever are entering professions in these fields. However, after women beginning working in STEM positions they often find there is still discrimination. Sometimes this takes the form of the pay gap that all women face: women earn 77 cents for every dollar men earn, on average. There have also been roadblocks to women receiving – or even asking for – promotions. In this seminar for women in STEM, Dr. Monica So covers three questions: (1) What are the personal consequences of not negotiating? (2) How do you identify your own negotiation goals? (3) How do you negotiate for what you want?
