Shirley Krohn speaks throughout Northern California on behalf of Communities Against Senior Exploitation (CASE). She begins her presentation by showing a short film produced by the California Attorney General’s office that labels financial exploitation of seniors “The Crime of the 2st Century.” The film and Ms. Krohn’s talk look at methods used by predators (including both strangers and elders’ family/caregivers), common scams, and tips on how to avoid becoming a victim. The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) estimates that there are five million elderly victims of financial crimes annually in the U.S., adding up to an estimated $40 billion in losses.
