Michelle Neyman Morris
Ph.D, R.d., Department of Nutrition and Food Science,
CSU, Chico
Dr. Morris questions some of the negative assumptions regarding the effects of obesity, which she calls “The War on Obesity.” She believes there are pitfalls of a weight-focused health paradigm, including the low long-term success rate of diets (80-95% of dieters regain their lost weight), the physical and psychological health risks of chronic dieting/weight cycling, and weight-based discrimination. Dr. Morris then presents information about the Health at Every Size® (HAES) program, which shifts the focus from weight management to health promotion. HAES utilizes the psychological concept of “mindfulness.” Dr. Morris also addresses societal problems related to weight, such as size discrimination. She finishes her presentation by discussing issues specific to older adults.
