The recent landslide election of far-right populist Jair Bolsonaro represented a remarkable turn of events in Brazil, a country shaken by ongoing corruption scandals and economic collapse. How do we explain the appeal of the "Trump of the Tropics," as he is known? And given his open admiration for Brazil's most recent military dictatorship, what are the implications for the country's democratic transition? In this presentation, Professors Jacque Chase (Geography and Planning) and Steve Lewis (History) address these fundamental questions.
