Message From the Dean: "I look forward to spending some time with you at our upcoming State of the College Webinar! So much has happened in the College of Natural Sciences over the past few years—lots of new faculty, a new science building, student research opportunities, major research, teaching, and instrumentation grants, and a gift that doubled the size of our ecological reserve. Please join me and friend of the college Dr. Marcia Moore in a conversation on the state of the college, and a chance to answer some of your questions. Find out what we have been up to, how you can keep engaged, and what we hope for the future!"
Dr. Marcia Moore is the former chief of medicine at Enloe Medical Center in Chico, and served as vice-chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine. In 2005, Dr. Moore was recognized as The American Heart Association’s Volunteer Physician of the Year and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority’s Community Woman of the Year. Having made great strides to increase awareness of women’s heart health, she also implemented the “Physician Heal Thy Self” program for doctors to evaluate the health of medical practitioners. Dr. Moore received her bachelor’s degree from Carleton College in Minnesota; completed her pre-med studies at University of California Berkeley, and graduated with her medical degree from University of California, San Francisco.
Dr. David M. Hassenzahl is an internationally recognized scholar of sustainability and risk analysis, with particular emphasis on the management, interpretation, and communication of uncertainty. Highlights of his experience at CSU, Chico include advances in undergraduate research, course redesign, and student support programs, as well as development of the university’s newest building, a 110,000 square foot replacement for the current Physical Sciences Building. He is the immediate past President of the Association of Environmental Studies and Sciences. Prior to coming to Chico State, Dr. Hassenzahl served as founding dean of the Falk School of Sustainability at Chatham University and Chair of the Department of Environmental Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Dr. Hassenzahl holds an undergraduate degree in Environmental Science and Paleontology (with honors) from the University of California at Berkeley and a Ph.D. in Science, Technology and Environmental Policy from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School.
