Celebrate Latin American People's History

Celebrate Latin American People's History

If you knew more about how social movements have triumphed in the past, would it change how you imagine the future? Would it shape how you see your own role in the world, or the power of collective memory?

The students of LAST 495W with Dr. Hannah Burdette used Justseeds Artists Cooperative's Celebrate People's History posters as a framework for engaging in public history through art. After studying some of the historical figures and social movements represented in these posters, students then chose other topics to research, designed their own posters and wrote a history from below. The end result is an exhibit at the Valene L. Smith Museum of Anthropology of original posters on topics ranging from student protests and environmental activism to reproductive justice and labor rights.

This podcast channel represents another dimension of our approach to public history. We invite you to listen to this series of conversations around key takeaways from the students' research and to contemplate
the power of art and activism to build new realities.
